Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

Released Date: October 13, 2009
Publisher: Simon and Schuster Children's Publishing
Pages: Hardcover (391 pages)
Age Group: Young Adult
Series: Hush, Hush #1
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Author Website: http://www.beccafitzpatrick.com/
Overall Rating: (5 out of 5 stars)

Description: For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her...until Patch comes along.
With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment, but after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is far more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.
For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life.

Book Trailer:

Memorable Quotes:

"Keep in mind that people change, but the past doesn't."
"She'll kill me if she finds you in here. Can you climb trees? Tell me you can climb a tree!"
Patch grinned, "I can fly."

"I don't go out with strangers," I said
Good thing i do. I'll pick you up at five."

"Before I forget, here's your homework. Where do you want me to put it?"
She pointed at the trash can. "Right there would be fine."

My Musings: When I first heard about this book, I knew that I had to pick it up. I am currently rightly a young adult novel on fallen angels, and was really excited to read another author's point of view. I was not disappointed.

Patch is a very intriguing, dangerous, sexy character. I found myself turning the pages to learn more about him and his past. Not only that but I felt a tug to him for his journey for redemption and humanity. I could not help but simpisize with him.

Nora was also another excellant character. I found my self connecting with her good girl behavior, because I used to be the same way in high school...but probably not as bad as her. All she needs is good ole dose of danger.

The plot has a really good pace, and I didn't think there was any slow parts within the pages. Overall a great read.

The only thing negative is that I found Nora's friend Vee to be annoying in many parts of the book. I wish she would shut up and stop getting into so much trouble. If she would trust Nora a little more, then she wouldn't be fiinding herself in sticky situations. Though I did enjoy the scene when she was doped up on pain meds at the hospital.

Cover Art: The cover is so gorgeous. It sparkles and has a beautiful man on top...and its not even a Cullen. What could be any better??

"Waiting On" Wednesday- (4)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine. The purpose of this event is to get bloggers to spotlight and share the books they are anticipating on coming out.

On my wishlist this Wednesday is: Stolen Nights by Rebecca Maizel.

Description: Thought you loved Infinite Days? Well, just wait until you read the sequel and second book in the Vampire Queen trilogy, Stolen Nights.

Right now there is not much a description avaliable, but if you want a better feel for this series than check out the first novel Infinite Days.

Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr

Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr
Released Date: May 1, 2008
Publisher: HarperTeen
Pages: Hardcover (325 pages)
Age Group: Young Adult
Series: Wicked Lovely #2
Genre: Fantasy
Author Website: http://www.melissa-marr.com/
Overall Rating: (4 out of 5 stars)

Description: Unbeknownst to mortals, a power struggle is unfolding in a world of shadows and danger. After centuries of stability, the balance among the Faery Courts has altered, and Irial, ruler of the Dark Court, is battling to hold his rebellious and newly vulnerable fey together. If he fails, bloodshed and brutality will follow.
Seventeen-year-old Leslie knows nothing of faeries or their intrigues. When she is attracted to an eerily beautiful tattoo of eyes and wings, all she knows is that she has to have it, convinced it is a tangible symbol of changes she desperately craves for her own life.
The tattoo does bring changes; not the kind Leslie has dreamed of, but sinister, compelling changes that are more than symbolic. Those changes will bind Leslie and Irial to the faery world, unable to resist its allures, and helpless to withstand its perils. . . .

Book Trailer: There is not a trailer available at the moment.

Memorable Quotes:

"Sometimes love means letting go when you want to hold on tighter."

"What does it mean when nightmares dream of peace? When shadows wish for light?"

"Do you ever wonder if what you look at is the same thing everyone else is seeing?'

He went even stiller at her side. 'Sometimes I'm sure it isn't the same...but that's not so bad is it? Seeing the world in a different way?'
Creative vision creates art' he motioned around the gallery 'that shows the rest of the world a new angle. That's a beautiful thing."

My Musings: Ink Exchange is a companion novel to the Wicked Lovely series. If you are looking for the sequel to the first novel, you would want to pick up Fragile Eternity, but I wouldn't suggest it due to material from this book carrying over to the next.

At first I wasn't sure how I was going to like this, because of being a companion novel. Basically, that means that secondary characters from the first book will step up to the fore front and become main characters in stead. After finishing it, I come to love and respect it.

You begin to learn alot of back story about Leslie, who was a brief character from the first book. What's shocking about her is that she hasn't lived a very comfortable life. She has suffered rape in the sight of someone who should have been protecting her all along. Melissa Marr was not afraid to get dark in any scene. It made me feel great sympathy for Leslie.

The upside to this is Niall. I really am glad to learn more about him and his life with the Dark Court. I kind of over looked him in Wicked Lovely, but I absolutely fell in love with him in this one. He is definitely in a tie with Seth for my love.

The true remarkable thing about the Dark Court is that the faeries are not that evil. You would think so based upon the name, but they are only trying to survive by the only way they know how. I found my self seeing them in a kinder light in some of the scenes.

Cover Art: As all ways, the Wicked Lovely books all have gorgeous covers. This one is no exception. It almost made me want to get a cool tattoo on my back...but luckily I came to my senses.

Publisher: Little, Brown Books
Pages: Hardcover (563 pages)
Age Group: Young Adult
Series: Castor Chronicles #1
Genre: Fantasy

Overall Rating: (5 out of 5 Stars)

Description: Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she’s struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps, and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town’s oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

Book Trailer:

Memorable Quotes:

"Mortals. I envy you. You think you can change things. Stop the universe. Undo what was done long before you came along. You are such beautiful creatures."

"So you are a vampire.'

I most certainly am not.' He looked annoyed. 'That's such a common phrase, such a cliche, and so unflattering. I suppose you believe in werewolves and aliens too. I blame television."

"Aunt Mercy put down her tiles, one at a time. I-T-C-H-I-N.
Aunt Grace leaned closer to the board, squinting. "Mercy Lynne, you're cheatin' again! What kinda word is that? Use it in a sentence."

"I'm itchin' ta have some a that white cake."

"That's not how you spell it." At least one of them could spell. Aunt Grace pulled one of the tiles off the board. "There's no T in itchin'." Or not."

My Musings: I picked up this book not knowing anything about it. Reading the title I assumed that I was going to read another vampire book, but was surprised and happy to realize that it was not. I really enjoyed this book from the inside out. The plot was great and flowed well. The characters were sensational and I can't wait to continue their journey in Beautiful Darkness.

Ethan Wate, the main character, was my favorite by far. His best character trait is his will not to conform to the crowd. I believe most people should be who their are no matter how others feel.

Another great element to the novel is the sense of family on both sides of the main characters. Ethan may not have his mom, but having his aunts and Amma is just enough. His wacky, crazy aunts had me rolling with laughter at their funny banter and baby squirrels. Lena on the other hand is fortunate to have relatives that are willing to protect her at all costs, even if they have to risk their own lives. I come from a very crazy, fun family and it was just like reading from a page of my own life.

The only thing I would change about this book would be Lena. There were moments in the book where I just wanted to strangle her. Its like one moment she wants Ethan around and then the next not. Make up your MIND!!!! Overall, two thumbs up :)

Cover Art: I kind of wish the cover was more impressive. The purple script is nice but I would have liked to see a picture of either Ethan, Lena, or both.

Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr

Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr

Released Date: June 12, 2007
Publisher: HarperTeen
Pages: Hardcover (328 pages)
Age Group: Young Adult
Series: Wicked Lovely #1
Genre: Fantasy
Author Website: http://www.melissa-marr.com/
Overall Rating: (4 out of 5 stars)

Description: Rule #3: Don't stare at invisible faeries.
Aislinn has always seen faeries. Powerful and dangerous, they walk hidden in the mortal world. Aislinn fears their cruelty-especially if they learn of her Sight-and wishes she were as blind to their presence as other teens.

Rule #2: Don't speak to invisible faeries.
Now faeries are stalking her. One of them, Keenan, who is equal parts terrifying and alluring, is trying to talk to her, asking questions Aislinn is afraid to answer.

Rule #1: Don't ever attract their attention.
But it's too late. Keenan is the Summer King, who has sought his queen for nine centuries. Without her, summer itself will perish. His is determined that Aislinn will become the Summer Queen at any cost-regardless of her plans or desires.

Suddenly none of the rules that have kept Aislinn safe are working anymore, and everything is on the line: her freedom; her best friend, Seth; everything.
Faery intrigue, mortal love, and the clash of ancient rules and modern expectations swirl together in Melissa Marr's stunning twenty-first-century faery tale.

Book Trailer:

Memorable Quotes:

"You say potato; I say potahto...I say integrity; you say deceit."

"And he smiled at her, truly smiled- wicked and lovely..."
"She stood in his kitchen, watching him toy with the ring in his lip. It wasn't quite that he was biting it, but sucking it into his mouth. He did that when he was concentrating. It isn't sexy. He's not sexy. But he was, and she was staring at him like a fool. "wow" she whispered (.....)"Wow, huh?" His voice was low, husky. His chair creaked as he stood. His footsteps seemed strangely loud as he closed the couple yards between them. Then he was beside her. "I can work with wow"

My Musings: For the longest time, I put off reading this book. The covers are very beautiful, but I didn't know how I was going to enjoy a book about faeries. I was never a big fan of the little cutesy faeries as a child, and I didn't think this book would be any different. I was wrong.

In Melissa Marr's world, faeries can be human sized creatures of great and terrible beauty. I found my self really getting into all of the different characters, especially Aislinn and Seth. I really wasn't the biggest fan of Keenan, which made me glad that Melissa didn't make a love triangle between him and Aslinn and Seth.

I will admit though that I did maintain a crush on Seth. It was quite refreshing to find a love interest to have a bad boy look, but a good guy interior. The only draw back was his to good-to-be attitude. He seemed way too perfect and understanding on the whole faery situation. It just didn't seem realistic. NO guy could ever be that good...sadly, yes I know.

Overall, I am really excited to continue the series with Ink Exchange. I wouldn't mind seeing this series be made into a film.

Cover Art: I am a big fan of Winter and snow, so I really enjoyed staring at this cover. The snow across the hands and the vibrant purple and pinks really stood out to me. Nine out of ten times if the cover isn't pretty than mostly likely I won't read it.

- Prologue "Wicked Lovely" by Melissa Marr

Yay!!! I Won my First Award.

So, today I woke up to a new comment added to my most recent post. To my surprise, I won an award from OCD about Books. I have only been maintaining this blog for such a short time, but it makes me happy to know that others appreciate it to. Thank you so much!!! And I plan to continue to produce the best blog that I can.

Here is what needs to be done:
1.Thank and link back to the person that gave this award.
2.Answer the 10 survey questions.
3.Pass the award along to 15 bloggers who you have recently discovered and who you think are fantastic.
4.Contact the bloggers you’ve picked to let them know about the award.

Questions:

1.If you blog anonymously are you happy doing it that way; if you are not anonymous do you wish you had started out anonymously so you could be anonymous now? I would never blog anonymously. My thoughts and feelings are my own and I want to share them with the world.

2.Describe one incident that shows your inner stubborn side: I went all the way to Staples to purchase a Kindle, because I was to impatient to wait for it to come in the mail through Amazon.

3.What do you see when you really look at yourself in the mirror? A girl that has a long way to go in life.

4.What is your favourite summer cold drink? Coke, but now that I stopped drinking sodas for good, I prefer some nice green tea.

5.When you take time for yourself, what do you do? Read and write.

6.Is there something you still want to accomplish in your life? What is it? I hope to write my own young adult novel and have it published....maybe have it become a movie....though the last part is more the long shot.

7.When you attended school, were you the class clown, the class overachiever , the shy person, or always ditching? I was definitely the shy one...it wasn't until I got into college that I became more the class clown.

8.If you close your eyes and want to visualize a very poignant moment of your life what would you see? I'm not sure...I had to look up poignant in the dictionary to answer this question...and alas I still don't know what it means.

9.Is it easy for you to share your true self in your blog or are you more comfortable writing posts about other people or events?  Personally, I would do both. I like to give people both sides of the spectrum: my view, and what is happening with others.

10.If you had the choice to sit down and read or talk on the phone, which would you do and why? Is that a trick question?? I would definitely read over talking on the phone any day. I try not to waste to much of my time talking on the phone. I mostly text...which still allows me to read...lol.

I will pass this award to the following bloggers:

Sunshine by Robin McKinley

Sunshine by Robin Mckinley

Released Date: April 29, 2010
Publisher: Penguin Group, USA
Pages: Paperback (416 pages)
Age Group: Young Adult
Series: Stand alone novel
Genre: Fantasy
Author Website: http://www.robinmckinley.com/
Overall Rating: (3 out of 5 stars)

Description: Rae Seddon, nicknamed Sunshine, lives a quiet life working at her stepfather's bakery. One night, she goes out to the lake for some peace and quiet.

Big mistake.

She is set upon by vampires, who take her to an old mansion. They chain her to the wall and leave her with another vampire, who is also chained. But the vampire, Constantine, doesn't try to eat her. Instead, he implores her to tell him stories to keep them both sane.

Realizing she will have to save herself, Sunshine calls on the long-forgotten powers her grandmother began to cultivate in her when she was a child. She transforms her pocketknife into a key and unchains herself--and Constantine. Surprised, he agrees to flee with her when she offers to protect him from the sun with magic. They escape back to town, but Constantine knows his enemies won't be far behind, which means that he and Sunshine will have to face them together.

A luminous, entrancing novel with an enthralling pair of characters at its heart.

Book Trailer: Currently, there is no trailer available.

Memorable Quotes:

"The train is roaring toward you and the villain is twirling his moustache and you're fussing that he's tied you to the tracks with the wrong kind of rope."

"I don't put up with being messed around, and I don't suffer fools gladly. The short version of that is that I'm a bitch. Trust me, I can provide character references."
"The Lone Ranger of vampires. Did that make me Tonto?"

My Musings: What brought me to purchase this book was the cover. You can't tell by the picture above, but its is really sparkley, like Sunshine (pun intended). The description on the back really got me excited to read it.

Now that I am done reading it, I was really dissappointed. It wasn't anything like I expected, especially since Neil Gaiman endorsed it on the cover.

First of all it was really hard to read this book. It usually takes me a day or two to finish, but this one took me a week and a half. There are no chapters, and very little dialogue. Most of the content takes place in the main characters head. I found that to be very fustrating and hard to find a place to stop when I needed it to.

The only reason I didn't give this book a rating less than three, is there were certain moments between Constatine (the vampire) and Sunshine (the human) that I liked.

The author plans to write another one, but I will have to be in a really good mood to ever purchase it in the near future.

Hope this review helps. Have a Happy Monday!!

The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff

The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff

Released Date: September 21, 2010
Publisher: Razorbill
Pages: Hardcover (352 pages)
Age Group: Young Adult
Series: The Replacement #1
Genre: Fantasy
Author Website: www.brennayovanoff.com
Overall Rating: (4 out of 5 stars)

Description: Mackie Doyle seems like everyone else in the perfect little town of Gentry, but he is living with a fatal secret - he is a Replacement, left in the crib of a human baby sixteen years ago. Now the creatures under the hill want him back, and Mackie must decide where he really belongs and what he really wants.

A month ago, Mackie might have told them to buzz off. But now, with a budding relationship with tough, wounded, beautiful Tate, Mackie has too much to lose. Will love finally make him worthy of the human world.

Book Trailer:

Memorable Quotes:

"Do you really want to know where we come from?" she said. "In every century, in every country, they'll call us something different. They'll say we're ghosts, angels, demons, elemental spirits, and giving us a name doesn't help anybody. When did a name change what someone is?"

My Musings: The Replacement is made up of all things that are ugly...which by the author's standards, that is a great compliment :)

Mackie was such an enjoyable character to encounter. I felt that I could really relate to his awkwardness, and his desire to be accepted for who he is by his classmates and his family.

I really enjoyed the interactions between Mackie and his sister. They truly had each other's back no matter the cost. The love and fierceness between them made me keep coming back for more.

The only reason I gave this book 4 stars was because of Tate. I kind of wished her and Mackie had more of a love relationship in this book, because I am a total sucker for a great romance. They seemed to fight more than have any passion in love. All the same, I would recommend this to anyone.

The world under Gentry is very SHOCKING and UGLY.

Cover Art: It is because of the cover that made me want to read this book in the first place. Who would have ever thought of a knife and a pair of scissors hanging over a baby crib?? It is UGLY, deliciousness.

My Musings: Incarceron was a very enjoyable read. I could not help, but fall in love with the main character Finn.

I picked up this book after a friend recommended it to me, and I can say I was not disappointed. This story took you into a futuristic world, where science, technology, and the renaissance come out to play together. It was dark, funny, and I kind of wished this place existed...in a non-twisted way, of course :)

I found the plot and context of the story to be complex, but can be oddly appealing to both guys and girls. I will admit though there were several moments throughout the book that were very confusing and hard to digest. It was like learning a whole new way of living.

Claudia, the other main character, is a very fiery girl. She is not afraid to get what she wants, and I loved that about her.

I can't wait until the movie version of Incarceron comes out.

Cover Art: You can't tell from the picture above, but the key is very sparkly and pretty. It really helped visualizing it while reading the story. If you brush your finger tips across it parts of the cover are raised.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Publisher: Scholastic, Inc.
Pages: Hardcover (374 pages)
Age Group: Young Adult
Series: The Hunger Games #1
Genre: Fantasy
Overall Rating: (5 out of 5 stars)

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Memberable Quotes:

"Remember, we're madly in love, so it's all right to kiss me anytime you feel like it."

"You don’t forget the face of the person who was your last hope."

"I don't want to lose the boy with the bread."

"I can feel Peeta press his forehead into my temple and he asks, 'So now that you've got me, what are you going to do with me?' I turn into him. 'Put you somewhere you can't get hurt."

My Musings: I absolutely fell in love with this book. It had me from the very first page. Its so good, its FABULOUS.

The most appealing part is that the author is not afraid to shock you with gory detail, and describing the ruthless behavior of the Capitol (which is the government). It is truly a dark and compelling tale from start to finish.

The main character, Katniss, is incredible. She is very strong and self-reliant. It is very refreshing to find characters like her that don't sit around and wait to be saved. She is usually the one saving others. I am all for female power.

What makes this book scary to me, is that it has the possibility to happen in our own world. Imagine total government control, where they force your children to fight to the death to show that they have all the power. Oooohh, I just got shivers.

If you are looking for a light hearted tale, than please look away because you will not find it here.

The ending could not have been any better. It left me stunned, and reaching for the next one.

On a side note: Suzanne Collins will be adapting this from book to the Silver screen. Yay!!!

Cover Art: The cover is very simple, but I love the material it is made out of. Its very sturdy, and will survive better than most hardcover paper coverings in my bag.
