-pg. 21 "The Iron King" by Julie Kagawa

Marked by P.C. and Kristen Cast

Released Date: May 1, 2007
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Pages: Hardcover (320 pages)
Age Group: Young Adult
Series: House of Night #1
Genre: Fantasy
Author Website: http://www.pccast.net/
Overall Rating: (3 out of 5 stars)

Description: The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampyres have always existed.  In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire--that is, if she makes it through the Change.  Not all of those who are chosen do.  It’s tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling.  She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx.  But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers.  When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

Book Trailer:
There is currently not a book trailer available.

Memorable Quotes:

"Actually, since I'm gay I think I should count for two guys instead of just one. I mean, in me you get the male point of view and you don't have to worry about me wanting to touch your boobies."
"Zoey Montgomery! Night has chosen thee; thy death will be thy birth. Night calls to thee; hearken to Her sweet voice. Your destiny awaits you at the House of Night!"
"I'm going to remember this, I told myself sternly. I'm going to remember how awful they made me feel today. So when I'm scared and alone and whatever else is going to happen to me starts to happen, I'm going to remember that nothing about be as bad as being stuck here. Nothing."

"The problem, of course, was that turning into a monster was the brighter of my two choices. Choice Number 1: I turn into a vampyre, which equals a monster in just about any human’s mind. Choice Number 2: My body rejects the Change and I die. Forever. So the good news is that I wouldn’t have to take the geometry test tomorrow."

My Musings: I was not the biggest fan of this book. It is hard for me to say that about a vampire book, but I felt the content was very childish for the age group that it was targeting. There were many moments where the scenes were so ridiculous that I had to laught out loud. It seemed like the author tried to use popular culture and failed at it.

The main character, Zoey Redbird, seemed to be very annoying from start to finish.
Cover Art:  I like the cover. It has a very mysterious feel to it.

"Waiting On" Wednesday- (19)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine. The purpose of this event is to get bloggers to spotlight and share the books they are anticipating on coming out.

On my wishlist this Wednesday is: Angel Burn by L.A. Weatherly

Description: Willow knows she’s different from other girls, and not just because she loves tinkering with cars. Willow has a gift. She can look into the future and know people’s dreams and hopes, their sorrows and regrets, just by touching them. She has no idea where this power comes from. But the assassin, Alex, does. Gorgeous, mysterious Alex knows more about Willow that Willow herself. He knows that her powers link to dark and dangerous forces, and that he’s one of the few humans left who can fight them. When Alex finds himself falling in love with his sworn enemy, he discovers that nothing is as it seems, least of all good and evil. In the first book in an action-packed romantic trilogy, L. A. Weatherly sends listeners on a thrill ride of a road trip – and depicts the human race at the brink of a future as catastrophic as it is deceptively beautiful.

Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead

Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead

Released Date: March 1, 2007
Publisher: Kensington
Pages: Paperback (343 pages)
Age Group: Adult
Series: Georgina Kincaid #1
Genre: Paranormal romance
Author Website: http://www.richellemead.com/
Overall Rating: (4 out of 5 stars)

Description:Succubus (n.) An alluring, shape-shifting demon who seduces and pleasures mortal men. Pathetic (adj.) A succubus with great shoes and no social life. See: Georgina Kincaid.

When it comes to jobs in hell, being a succubus seems pretty glamorous. A girl can be anything she wants, the wardrobe is killer, and mortal men will do anything just for a touch. Granted, they often pay with their souls, but why get technical?

But Seattle succubus Georgina Kincaid's life is far less exotic. Her boss is a middle-management demon with a thing for John Cusack movies. Her immortal best friends haven't stopped teasing her about the time she shape-shifted into the Demon Goddess getup complete with whip and wings. And she can't have a decent date without sucking away part of the guy's life. At least there's her day job at a local bookstore--free books; all the white chocolate mochas she can drink; and easy access to bestselling, sexy writer, Seth Mortensen, aka He Whom She Would Give Anything to Touch but Can't.

But dreaming about Seth will have to wait. Something wicked is at work in Seattle's demon underground. And for once, all of her hot charms and drop-dead one-liners won't help because Georgina's about to discover there are some creatures out there that both heaven and hell want to deny...

Book Trailer:
Currently, there is not a book trailer avaliable.

Memorable Quotes:

"Sometimes you wake up from a dream. Sometimes you wake up in a dream. And sometimes, every once in a while, you wake up in someone else's dream."

"Vampires. Honestly, they're like children sometimes."

"Love is rarely flawless,” Carter pointed out. “Humans delude themselves by thinking it has to be. It is the imperfection that makes love perfect."

"Longing surged up within me. I wanted it. Oh God, I wanted it. I didn't want to hear Jerome chastise me for my "all lowlifes, all the time" seduction policy. I wanted to come home and tell someone about my day. I wanted to go out dancing on the weekends. I wanted to take vacations together. I wanted someone to hold me when I was upset, when the ups and downs of the world pushed me too far. I wanted someone to love. "

My Musings: I was alreay a fan of Richelle's young adult series, Vampire Academy, so I knew I had to dive into her adult books. If you are a fan of Vampire Academy then be prepared for a whole different kind of story. Richelle doesn't hold back and alot of the scenes are very graphic.

The book started out slow for me, because of the building of background story, but it did in fact pick up half way into the book. Georgina is a very different kind of heroine, who must have sex with humans in order to survive, but tries to only suck out the souls of the bad guys (what a humanitarian). She is definitely corky and tries to live the most normal life, despite her occupation. It is her love for friends and the good guys that give her a likeable personality.

At first I had a hard time accepting Seth as a love interest (because he is nothing like Dimitri Belikov from Vampire Academy), but I really began to love him towards the end. He is quite and shy, but can express himself beautifully through the power of the written word.

My favorite secondary character would have to be the angel Carter. Who would have thought a soldier for God likes to drink liquor and hang out with demons.

There is plenty of Richelle's humor weaved throughout the pages, which is a major pick plus.

It was, because of the way it ended that I decided to give this book 4 stars, instead of 3.

Cover Art: I am not the biggest fan of the cover shown above. The mass paperback edition is much better. You can find it here.

"Waiting On" Wednesday- (18)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine. The purpose of this event is to get bloggers to spotlight and share the books they are anticipating on coming out.

On my wishlist this Wednesday is: Hourglass by Myra McEntire

Description: "Since the age of fourteen, Emerson Cole has seen strange things – dead things – swooning Southern Belles, soldiers, and other eerie apparitions of the past. She’s tried everything to get rid of the visions: medication, counseling, asylums. Nothing’s worked.

So when Emerson's well-meaning brother calls in yet another consultant from a mysterious organization called the Hourglass, Emerson’s willing to give it one last try.

Michael Weaver is no ordinary consultant. He's barely older than she is; he listens like no one she's ever met before; and he doesn't make her feel the least bit crazy. As Emerson ventures deeper into the world of the Hourglass, she begins to learn the truth about her past, her future--and her very life.

A seductive time-slip novel that merges the very best of the paranormal and science fiction genres, Myra McEntire’s Hourglass is a stunning debut from an author to watch."

"This was why people got mated, Rehv suddenly thought. Fuck the sex and the social position. If they were smart, they did it to make a house that had no walls and an invisible roof and a floor that no could walk on-and yet the structure was a shelter no storm could blow down, no match could torch up, no passage of years could degrade.
That was when it hit him. A mated bond like that helped you through shit nights like this."

Across the Universe by Beth Revis

Across the Universe by Beth Revis

Released Date: January 11, 2011
Publisher: Razorbill
Pages: Hardcover (398 pages)
Age Group: Young Adult
Series: Across the Universe #1
Genre: Sci-Fi
Author Website: http://www.bethrevis.com/
Overall Rating: (4 out of 5 stars)

Description: A love out of time. A spaceship built of secrets and murder.

Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.

Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone-one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship-tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next.
Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

Book Trailer:

Memorable Quotes:

"I never thought about how important the sky was until I didn't have one."

"This is the secret of the stars, I tell myself. In the end, we are alone. No matter how close you seem, no one else can touch you."

"I could tell them about the different kinds of rain, pouring rain that's perfect for when you want to stay inside and watch a movie or read, or piercing rain that feels like needles on your skin, or soft summer rain that makes your first kiss with your first love all the sweeter."

"Dreams are like that: they go in and out of memories and scenes, but they are never real. They're never real, and I hate them because they aren't."

My Musings: I was really excited to read this book. I read the first chapter online and couldn't wait to dive into the rest of the pages. I was definitely not disappointed. My usual tastes in books are not sci-fi, but I found that this was a very easy book to get through.

The changing of the perspectives between the two main characters, Amy and Elder, helped to understand the struggles of both sides of the situation. Amy is a character you can relate to. She goes through many hardships that give perspective on life and makes you appreciate the mundane things in life. Because on the Godspeed, she does not have the simple luxuries of a night sky, a McDonalds hamburger, or other ridiculus things that we have to enjoy on Earth. I truly enjoyed reading her story. Elder on the other hand, has never lived a life on Earth, and has a hard time relating to Amy on certain levels. He struggles to live a life like his best friend, while trying to learn how to be the future leader of the Godspeed. What both of these characters have in common is that something wicked is happening on the ship, and they must rely on each other to figure out the villian.

The main reason I gave this book a 4/5 is because there wasn't enough romance between Elder and Amy. I am a sucker for romance and I crave it. I just wasn't satisfied in that department with this book. The good news is there are two more books in the future for this series, so I hope my romance addiction will be fulfilled.

Happy Reading!!!!

Cover Art: I am absolutely in love with the cover.
